When we talk about German cuisine, the first dishes that come to mind are bratwurst, pretzels, or baked pork knuckle. That is not surprising! After all, those are the most famous German dishes outside the country and possibly the easiest to find. Although if you travel around the country, you will discover many others that are delicious and not as well known as the previous ones. Specifically, when we visited Berlin, we tried spätzle, and since then, we have been in love with this type of pasta.
But… what are spätzle? It is a kind of pasta popular in the southern part of Germany and Austria that is usually served as an accompaniment to meats or as a main dish. Its ingredients are simple: flour, egg, salt, and water. Whatsmore, it is similar to any other type of pasta and can be found in different shapes. In addition, they are part of an infinite number of recipes, for example, this spätzle with bacon and grated cheese.

Ingredients for cooking spätzle with bacon and grated cheese for 2 persons
- 500 grams of spätzle
- 1 onion
- 200 grams of bacon
- Emmental cheese
- Black pepper
- Butter
Preparing the ingredients for spätzle with bacon and grated cheese
- Cut the bacon into cubes.
- Then, julienne the onion.
Cooking the bacon
- Melt a large tablespoon of butter in a frying pan over medium heat.
- Sauté the bacon and the onion over medium heat until the former has colored and the latter has softened.
Boiling the spätzle
- Boil the spätzle gently for a few minutes. You will notice the pasta is ready because it will start to float, so don’t neglect them because it only needs very little time in the water!
- Once the pasta is ready, strain it and add a tablespoon of butter to prevent it from sticking.
- Then, add the onion and the bacon. Season it to taste with salt and pepper and mix all the ingredients together.
Grating the cheese
- Serve the spätzle with bacon in a baking dish and cover it with Emmental cheese.
- Bake it in the oven at maximum until the cheese is grated, and that’s it!
Result: A delicious dish of spätzle with bacon and grated cheese.
As you can see, the elaboration of these spätzle with bacon and grated cheese is simple and quick. In fact, you don’t need a lot of cooking knowledge to prepare it at home! Once you take it out of the oven, you can garnish the dish with chives or parsley to give it a touch of color.
In my opinion, the best thing about this kind of pasta is its versatility. In other words, it is very adaptable to different recipes. But it works perfectly by experimenting with the existing ones.
